I have a question for you: why do we say “make a mistake” not “do a
mistake”? The answer is collocation. Collocations are words which just fit
together. There isn’t always a logical or clear reason. Collocations are very
common in English. Every language has collocations, it’s not just English.
What is a collocation?
Typical word combinations that regularly occur in English speech and
writing are called collocations. In other words, collocations are those word
combinations and short phrases which your English teacher asked you to
memorize as examples of use when you studied new words. The verb "to
collocate" has the following meanings: to place together, to arrange in
proper order.

Типичные
сочетания слов, регулярно возникающие в английской устной и письменной речи,
называют collocations. Другими словами, collocations – это те словосочетания
и фразы, которые ваш учитель английского языка просил вас запомнить как
примеры употребления, когда вы изучали новые слова. Глагол to collocate имеет
следующие значения: поместить вместе, расположить в правильном порядке.

Why learn collocations?
·
Your language
will be more natural and more easily understood.
·
You will have
alternative and richer ways of expressing yourself.
·
It is easier for
our brains to remember and use language in chunks or blocks rather than as
single words.
